Trees

Axis Gallery, Sacramento — 2025

The ancient oak trees in my neighborhood have become familiar presences in my daily life. Their strength, resilience, and generosity seem enduring, yet they are also vulnerable to drought, aging, and change. I wanted to explore both their permanence and their fragility.

For this exhibition, I worked with cyanotypes and anthotypes, two historic photographic processes that rely on sunlight. Cyanotypes preserve their images in rich indigo blues, while anthotypes, made with plant pigments, gradually fade when exposed to light.

I am interested in this relationship between what remains and what disappears. The photographic processes themselves become part of the meaning of the work, reflecting the passage of time, the resilience of these ancient trees, and the ephemeral beauty of the natural world.
