Gallery Sitters

In 2017, I began making chairs from trees that had died during California’s devastating drought and fires and washed ashore at Folsom Lake near my home. I wanted to extend the generosity of these trees beyond their lives.

I chose the chair because it is perhaps the most anthropomorphic object we live with. It has arms, legs, a back, and a seat. Its purpose is to receive and support us. By transforming fallen trees into places to sit, I hoped to offer gallery visitors a moment of rest while drawing attention to environmental loss and climate change.

The exhibition also included ceramic water bottles, reflecting on the drought, the water these trees needed to survive, and our relationship with consumption and the natural world.
